Our Goals

On behalf of PUPP and this summer's art staff, our goals for the summer is to enhance student learning and experience through creative projects that challenge their view of what art can be. Through photography and found objects students explored philosophical ideas and themes relevant to today's climate. Art class is meant to be a safe place for expression and meaning making through creative work and collaboration.

Reflective Entries

Throughout the summer, all PUPP scholars were in charge of keeping a personal sketchbook/journal/blogs to use as a was to reflect upon topics that were being discussed with Art, the connections those topics touch on conversations in other classes, and how that overlapped with the themes for the entire summer. The students made an entry each week in addition to decorating their covers. Students focused their entries on themes we covered in class such as Race, Americanization, Identity, and Education. Students also reflected on the Artists Highlighted in class. Some artists highlighted included Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Omar Viktor Diop, Mario Moore, and Kehinde Wiley.

Bringing life and fiction together

By examining Found Artists and looking at what students had access to, the Art Staff decided to have the Senior and Sophomore students make art with objects they could grab from around around their homes. The students made these mixed media pieces using the themes of the summer and their personal experiences to create artworks unique to them.

Capturing the world around us

For the Junior Scholars, the Art Staff decided to have them focus on a series of photographers and examine how they were able to capture a rapidly changing world in a single frame. We gave the scholars an opportunity to look at the world through their own lens. By giving them a series of lessons to the foundations of photography, we equipped them with the tools to take images of narratives within their homes, neighborhoods, and cultures.

Art Class this summer was such a great space to let our creativity come to life! We were able to have the freedom to create any form of art on our sketchbooks, whether it be drawings, photographs, or collages. Our art teachers Ms.Stef, Nancy, Emma, and Nicole were amazing, they expanded our views on art and presented us with different artists in every class in order to possibly influence our own ideas for our final projects! The presentations and discussions were very helpful and motivated me to let my imagination do its work. At the end of the day, there are no rules to art!

Art class was a great class this year. It never fails to relax and ease my mind from any stress or worries I have conserning other classes. I also loved how our final project was photography. I've always been interested in photography so it was a great opportunity to explore that area.

This class was truly amazing. Everyone was so sweet and supportive. I really felt like I could express myself in this class. This class was one of my highlights of the whole summer institute!
